General
Information
As the
conference takes place on several different levels at the EICC,
connected by just one escalator plus stairs. We would be grateful if
you could advise us if you have any mobility problems, if you have
not already done so on your reply form.
Car parking at the EICC
For those of you travelling
to the EICC by car, there are three car parks near the conference
centre, however it must be noted that Edinburgh city centre parking
is fairly expensive and costs approximately £8-£9 for 8 hours.
Flights
Edinburgh International
airport has approximately 40 flights daily from London’s airports,
Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted. There are also daily direct
flights from Amsterdam, Belfast, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin,
Frankfurt, Paris and Zurich.
Edinburgh is accessible to
travellers from the United States and Canada either through one of
London’s airports, or by flying directly into Glasgow International
Airport which has daily flights from Chicago (American Airlines) and
New York (Continental Airlines.)
On arrival at Edinburgh
International Airport:
Edinburgh International
airport is located 8 miles (12km) from the city centre. Excellent
coach and taxi connections make the journey to the city just 20
minutes from the airport. An average taxi fare is £15.00. Lothian
buses operate regular city centre transfers with fares starting at
£3.30 for a single adult fare.
Taxis:
Edinburgh is serviced by
fleets of black hackney cabs (although many are painted with unusual
and colourful advertising!) which can be flagged down on the street
at any time of the day. Alternatively, you may wish to use a
rickshaw, which are available to hire in the evenings. These can
also be flagged down on the street. Not so comfortable for long
journeys though!
On arrival at Glasgow
International Airport:
Glasgow International Airport
is located 8 miles (12km) west of Glasgow city centre. There are no
direct trains or buses connecting the airport to Edinburgh, however
there are regular buses into Glasgow city centre and bus or train
connections to Edinburgh. The distance between Glasgow and
Edinburgh is 50 miles, and by train the journey is one hour.
Further information for those wishing to connect from Glasgow is
available at
www.baa.co.uk
(select Glasgow and “Getting here”).
Dress Code
The dress code for the
conference sessions and both evening functions is smart casual
(jacket required, tie not required). Comfortable shoes are
recommended for both the site visits and the evening events along
with a warm jacket or coat, particularly for the Edinburgh Castle
reception as it can get a bit chilly in the evenings. We would also
suggest you bring a raincoat or umbrella, just in case!
Climate
The weather conditions in
Edinburgh in September can be pleasant but often variable and
occasionally quite wet! The average daytime temperature is in the
region of 12 oC-16 oC.
